Sathish Thangavel and Uma Mahalingam are the owners and operators of Beaver Creek Natural Farms in Tatamagouche. Sathish and Uma both grew up in India surrounded by agriculture. They moved here to find a better work-life balance and a healthier way of life while continuing the farming traditions of their parents, grandparents, and ancestors. Through farming, they can spend quality time together and provide their children with the same opportunities that they had growing up on a farm. They also enjoy farming because of the divine feeling they get from being able to share a beautiful pesticide-free harvest with their community and loved ones.

For the last three years, they have used their 1-2 acre farm to produce vegetables that are traditionally used in Asian and Indian dishes including amaranth, okra, bottle gourd, and hyacinth beans. They sell their products locally in several locations including Sackville Farmers Market, New Indian Bazaar, Redchilles Indian Bazaar, and Fresh Organics Indian Online Store. They also take pre-orders and deliver directly to consumers.

They are both very passionate about sustainable farming. They believe that economically and socially sustainable agriculture creates access to healthy food for all, and prioritizes people and communities. It is very important to them to become self-sustaining like their ancestors. In the future, they hope to be able to produce vegetables year-round on their farm. The most challenging aspect they face in farming is the weather. Working to protect their plants from bad weather while finding time to get everything finished on the farm can be difficult. Despite the challenges, they enjoy the day-to-day work on the farm like bed preparation, seeding, and transplanting. They love to know how much their community enjoys their produce, and that they are feeding people they know and love.
