Mamie’s Alpacas – 2018

Widow, senior, survivor – three words that Rachel MacGillivray of Mamie’s Alpacas uses to describe herself. In 2007 Rachel moved to Glendale, Cape Breton and has been there ever since.

You may be curious how she decided to become an alpaca farmer, well, it’s all thanks to a workshop.

“Three years after I beat cancer, I took a dream farm workshop,” she explained. “It helped me decided what I wanted to farm – alpacas. They’re easy to care for and I can do most of their care by myself. I only have to hire a shearer once a year, and I have a neighbour who comes to help when the de-worming needs to be administered.”

In the fall of 2013 she started with four alpacas, the following spring she purchased two more females. After that she rented out a sire and got three crias (babies) from that breeding.

For the last four years Mamie’s Alpacas has opened their doors to the public for Open Farm Day.

“I participate in Open Farm Day because I love showing people the alpacas. They are loved by all who visit them. So many folks are amazed by the animals and want to find out more about them – I love the curiosity.”

Have you ever wanted to walk among a herd of alpacas? This is your chance. In fact, there is one alpaca in particular that is known to give kisses and enjoys hugs from children.

Mamie’s is also expecting some crias this fall, in September and October! Who knows, maybe there will be an Open Farm Day baby – imagine that!

Along with the alpacas you can also find some free-range hens – another favourite of the children who love to hold the hens.

“You will certainly fall in love with those exotic animals – I did.”

Mamie’s Alpacas can’t wait to see you in September!
